Bryanston School, Dorset. DT11 0PX
Attending a boarding school has been one of the best experiences I have had. It has enabled me to develop close relationships with friends and teachers and has taught me to be independent as well as the importance of working in a team.
Fashion Show: I produced a fashion show as part of the school festival in which I designed and made a large proportion of the clothes modelled; directed models and light and sound technicians; designed the layout of the catwalk; made the soundtrack and carried out all the other jobs associated with producing and promoting such an event.
Photography: This year I have taken photography lessons as an extracurricular activity and spend much of my spare time developing my skills. I have recently had commissions for some of my photos.
Work experience in a shop in London: I spent a week in “Cabbages and Roses”, a boutique in Chelsea, helping run the shop, taking telephone and internet orders, manning the shop floor, operating the till and dealing with some very demanding customers, wrapping and packaging parcels for mail order and (best of all) designing the window and shop floor display.
Making installations: As part of my art course, I have enjoyed experimenting with different techniques and materials to produce unique and personal pieces. Installations enable me to combine my clothes-making skills with my photography and other artistic skills.
Assistant Manager of school bookshop: I helped with the running of the school bookshop by ordering and selling books and keeping a constant account of the stock. I arranged and filed information to ensure the smooth running of the shop.
Classroom Assistant, Blandford St. Mary, Dorset: As part of the school’s pioneering programme I have worked alongside a primary school teacher for one afternoon a week for 2 terms. I have helped by listening to the children read, assisting with art and craft, teaching them new skills, setting up activities, organising and supervising children both inside and outside, dealing with peer group problems among the children, comforting them and generally helping to ensure the smooth running of the class.
Helping with the clerical work associated with sending out annual contracts for my father’s gardening business e.g. typing addresses into a database and producing address labels.
Designing and making clothes and accessories including commissions for friends and family. I devote most of my free time to making clothes, I find it very rewarding and enjoy running my own mini-business.
Making jewellery to commission. I taught myself how to make jewellery and have been selling to friends and family and this has led to commissions from other people.
Boarding school has taught me a lot about the need to prioritise my academic work and other activities efficiently and as a result I am a very organised person and often help friends to organise themselves.
My communication skills are demonstrated by my ability to encourage and motivate others, whether in theatre productions, or helping with teaching. I have also taken on several individual presentations for class projects.
I have undertaken various projects in my academic work where we have worked in groups; this has involved planning, contributing to and coordinating the various aspects of an assignment. I also enjoy team games such as hockey and rowing and have represented the school in both (although hockey at a low level!) I am looking forward to doing 'Young Enterprise' next year, which will give me the experience of all aspects of starting and running a business and working in a team.
I particularly enjoy Art, and have worked with fabrics, clay, papier mache, plaster, plastic and many different art mediums. I love designing and making clothes and most of my free time is spent doing this; for two years I have chosen to attend a weekly batik class. As a result of my skills I have a wardrobe perfectly suited to my style. I also attend a weekly ballet class in my free time.
I am computer literate with good keyboard skills and sound working knowledge of Claris Works, Microsoft packages, Adobe Photoshop, Excel, Paint Shop Pro, Vector works, Power point, In Design, Email and Internet.
I have enjoyed visiting several different countries in Europe such as France and Spain, where I have been able to use my language skills.
AS/A2 Levels Art, French, Maths, Spanish and Graphics.
